राहुल द्रविड हे 2020 पासून भारतीय संघाचे मुख्य प्रशिक्षक आहेत. त्यांच्या मार्गदर्शनात संघाने उत्कृष्ट कामगिरी केली असली तरी भारतीय संघाला आयसीसी ट्रॉफी जिंकण्यात अपयश आले. त्यानंतर आता द्रविड स्वतः 2024 टी20 विश्वचषकानंतर या पदावर राहण्यास इच्छुक नाहीत. त्यामुळे बीसीसीआयने या पदासाठी जाहिरात दिली.
भारतीय संघाचा मुख्य प्रशिक्षक बनवण्यासाठी बीसीसीआय काही नावांबाबत आग्रही आहे. यामध्ये भारताचा माजी सलामीवीर गौतम गंभीर, ऑस्ट्रेलियाचा माजी कर्णधार रिकी पॉंटिंग व आयपीएल इतिहासातील सर्वात यशस्वी प्रशिक्षक असलेला न्यूझीलंडचा स्टीफन फ्लेमिंग यांचा समावेश आहे. मात्र, यापैकी कोणीच अद्याप काहीही बोललेले नाही. अशात भारताचा माजी फिरकीपटू हरभजन सिंग याने मोठे वक्तव्य केले आहे.
एका वृत्तवाहिनीशी बोलताना तो म्हणाला,
“संधी मिळाली तर मी पुन्हा एकदा मैदानावर येईल. प्रशिक्षण देणे म्हणजे या खेळाडूंना कव्हर ड्राईव्ह किंवा पुलचा फटका खेळायला शिकवणे असे होत नाही. त्यांना ते येत असते म्हणून ते या स्तरावर खेळत असतात. या खेळाडूंचे योग्य व्यवस्थापन करणे व त्यांच्यात संघभावना निर्माण करणे हे प्रशिक्षकाचे काम असते.”
हरभजन यापूर्वी देखील आपण भारतीय संघाचा प्रशिक्षक बनण्यासाठी इच्छुक असल्याचे अनेकदा बोललेला आहे. भारतीय संघाच्या नव्या प्रशिक्षकाचा कार्यकाळ 1 जुलै 2024 ते 31 डिसेंबर 2027 असा असेल. यामध्ये भारतीय संघ प्रत्येकी एक टी20 विश्वचषक, वनडे विश्वचषक व चॅम्पियन्स ट्रॉफी खेळेल. तर, जागतिक कसोटी चॅम्पियनशिपच्या दोन सायकल होतील.
