न्यूझीलंड क्रिकेट संघाचा कर्णधार केन विल्यम्सन (Kane Williamson) याने मोठा निर्णय घेतला आहे. टी20 विश्वचषकातील (T20 World Cup 2024) न्यूझीलंड संघाच्या खराब कामगिरीनंतर त्याने कर्णधारपदाचा राजीनामा दिला असून, 2024-2025 वर्षासाठी दिला जाणारा केंद्रीय करार देखील नाकारला आहे.

टी20 विश्वचषकातील सर्वात सातत्यपूर्ण संघ असलेल्या न्यूझीलंडला यावेळी साखळी फेरी देखील पार करता आली नाही. त्यानंतर विल्यम्सनने हा निर्णय घेतला. तो आता न्यूझीलंडसाठी कोणत्याच प्रकारात कर्णधार नसेल. मागील वर्षे त्याने कसोटी कर्णधारपद सोडले होते. या सोबतच त्याने बोर्डाचा पुढील वर्षाचा केंद्रीय करार स्वीकारण्यात देखील नकार दिला आहे. मात्र, तरीदेखील तो राष्ट्रीय संघासाठी खेळू शकतो.
आपल्या निवेदनात तो म्हणाला,
“नजीकच्या काळात थोडेच आंतरराष्ट्रीय क्रिकेट खेळले जाणार आहे. त्यामध्ये अधिकाधिक युवा खेळाडूंना संधी मिळायला हवी. माझी पहिली प्राथमिकता नेहमीच देशासाठी क्रिकेट खेळणे असेल. मात्र, मी केंद्रीय करार स्वीकारत नाही. विदेशात खेळाच्या काही संधी शोधण्यासाठी मी हा निर्णय घेतला आहे.”
केन विल्यम्सन हा न्यूझीलंड क्रिकेट संघाचा आजवरचा सर्वात यशस्वी करण्यात आला आहे. त्याच्या नेतृत्वात संघाने 2019 वनडे व 2020 टी20 विश्वचषकाच्या अंतिम फेरीत प्रवेश केला होता. तर, 2021 जागतिक कसोटी चॅम्पियनशिप आपल्या नावे केली होती. तसेच 2022 टी20 विश्वचषक व 2023 वनडे विश्वचषकाची उपांत्य फेरी गाठलेली.
