जर्मनीचा माजी फुटबॉलर व दिग्गज गोलकीपर ऑलीव्हर कान हा काही दिवसांपूर्वी भारत दौऱ्यावर आला होता. भारतातील फुटबॉलसाठी असलेला एकंदरीत माहोल पाहून त्याने भारताला फुटबॉलमध्ये भविष्य असल्याचे म्हटले. त्यासाठी काय उपाययोजना कराव्या लागतील हे देखील त्याने सांगितले.
मुंबईत आयोजित एका कार्यक्रमात कान उपस्थित झाला त्यावेळी भारतीय फुटबॉलच्या भवितव्यखविषयी बोलताना तो म्हणाला,
“भारतातील फुटबॉल आवडणाऱ्या तरुणांना एका संरचित प्रणालीची गरज आहे. मी पाहिले आहे की इथल्या लोकांना फुटबॉल प्रचंड आवडते. ते फुटबॉलसाठी भावनिक आहेत. तरुण खेळाडूंचा विकास हे सर्वांचे ध्येय पाहिजे. त्यासाठी योग्य नियोजन करणे गरजेचे ठरते. तुम्ही वयाच्या सहाव्या सातव्या वर्षीपासून फुटबॉलर होण्याचे ठरवल्यास व्यावसायिक क्लबसाठी खेळण्यासाठी काय करावे लागते याची कल्पना येते.”
तो पुढे म्हणाला,
“ज्यावेळी मी युवा होतो त्यावेळी माझ्यासमोर काही वरिष्ठ खेळाडू मार्गदर्शक म्हणून उभे होते. आताच्या पिढीकडे रोनाल्डो, मेस्सी किंवा बफॉन यांसारखे आदर्श आहेत. भारतातून देखील अशाप्रकारे आदर्श खेळाडू तयार व्हायला हवेत.”
कान हा जर्मनीचा सर्वकालीन महान गोलकीपर म्हणून ओळखला जातो. त्याने 2008 मध्ये आपला अखेरचा व्यवसायिक सामना भारतातच खेळला होता. कोलकाता येथील सॉल्ट लेक स्टेडियममध्ये त्यावेळी तो बायर्न म्युनिक संघासाठी खेळलेला. तब्बल वीस वर्षाची त्याची व्यावसायिक फुटबॉलर म्हणून कारकीर्द राहिली आहे.
