नाणेफेक जिंकल्यानंतर प्रथम फलंदाजी संधी मिळालेल्या भारतासाठी विराटने सुंदर सुरुवात करून दिली. मार्को जेन्सन याने टाकलेल्या पहिल्या षटकातील दुसऱ्या चेंडूवर स्ट्राइक मिळाल्यावर त्याने पॉईंटच्या दिशेने चौकार वसूल केला. जेन्सनने पुढील चेंडू पायावर टाकल्यानंतर त्याने शानदार फ्लिक करत आणखी चार धावा मिळवल्या. याच षटकातील अखेरचा चेंडूवर विराटने स्ट्रेट ड्राईव्ह मारत भारताला पहिल्या षटकात 15 धावा मिळवून दिल्या.

विराटला या स्पर्धेत आतापर्यंत चांगली कामगिरी करता आली नव्हती. त्याची सर्वाधिक धावसंख्या 37 राहिली. तो तीन सामन्यात दुहेरी धावसंख्या देखील गाठू शकला नाही.
