मागील विश्वचषकातील उपांत्य सामन्यात भिडलेल्या या दोन संघातील नाणेफेक इंग्लंडने आपल्या नावे केली. नाणेफेक जिंकून प्रथम गोलंदाजीचा त्यांचा निर्णय लवकर योग्य ठरला. विराट कोहली (9) व रिषभ पंत (4) हे लवकर बाद झाले. त्यानंतर मात्र कर्णधार रोहित शर्मा व सूर्यकुमार यादव यांनी जबाबदारी आपल्या खांद्यावर घेतली. पावसाचा व्यत्यय आल्यानंतरही त्यांनी आपला संयम राखत 83 धावांची महत्त्वपूर्ण भागीदारी केली.
रोहितने यादरम्यान स्पर्धेतील आपले तिसरे अर्धशतक पूर्ण केले. त्याने 39 चेंडूंमध्ये 57 धावा केल्या. तर दुसरीकडे सूर्यकुमारने 36 चेंडूंमध्ये 47 धावांचे योगदान दिले. त्यानंतर हार्दिक पंड्या 23 व जडेजा नाबाद 17 धावा करत संघाला 170 पर्यंत पोहोचवले. इंग्लंडसाठी जॉर्डनने तीन बळी मिळवले.
171 धावांची आव्हान पार करताना इंग्लंडला चांगली सुरुवात मिळाली. जोस बटलरने 3 षटकात 26 धावा केल्या. मात्र, चौथ्या षटकातील पहिल्या चेंडूवर अक्षर पटेलने त्याला बाद केले. पुढच्या षटकात फिल सॉल्ट हा बुमराहच्या चेंडूवर त्रिफळाचित झाला. जॉनी बेअरस्टो हा देखील खाते खोलू शकला नाही. तर मोईन अलीने 8 व करनने 2 धावांचे योगदान दिले.
