या सामन्यातून दोन्ही संघांनी विश्वचषकातील आपल्या मोहिमेची सुरुवात केली. नाणेफेक गमावल्यानंतर प्रथम फलंदाजीची संधी मिळालेल्या आयर्लंड संघाची सुरुवात खराब झाली. अर्शदीप सिंग याने तिसऱ्या षटकात दोन्ही सलामीवीर स्टर्लिंग व बालबिर्नी यांना तंबूत पाठवले. त्यानंतर बुमराह व सिराज यांनी टेक्टर व डॉकरेल यांना बाद केले. उपकर्णधार हार्दिक पंड्या याने मधल्या षटकात तीन बळी मिळवत आयर्लंडची अवस्था 8 बाद 50 अशी केली.
अखेर जोशुआ लिटल व डेलानी यांनी काही मोठे फटके खेळत संघाला पुढे नेण्याचा प्रयत्न केला. लिटल याने 13 चेंडूवर 14 धावा केल्या. डेलानी याने अर्शदीपवर हल्ला चढवत 14 चेंडूवर 26 धावा केल्या. यात दोन चौकार व दोन षटकारांचा समावेश होता. मात्र, 16 व्या षटकातील अखेरच्या चेंडूवर फ्री हिट असताना तो धावबाद झाला. भारतासाठी हार्दिक पंड्या याने सर्वाधिक तीन बळी टिपले. तर, अर्शदीप व बुमराहने दोन गडी बाद केले. फिरकीपटू अक्षर पटेल याला एक गडी बाद करण्यात यश आले.
