सुरुवातीच्या सामन्यातील सलग 2 पराभवामुळे न्यूझीलंड संघाला यापूर्वीच विश्वचषकातून बाहेर पडावे लागले होते. तुलनेने दुबळ्या असलेल्या पीएनजीविरूद्ध त्यांच्या गोलंदाजांनी जबरदस्त कामगिरी करत केवळ 78 धावांमध्ये संपूर्ण संघ बाद केला. मात्र, लॉकी फर्ग्युसन याने इतिहासात नोंद होईल असा स्पेल टाकला.
